Of all the stories told about Saint Nicholas, none is more cherished than the tale of the three bags of gold. It is a story of desperation turned to hope — and it’s the reason children still hang stockings by the fireplace every Christmas Eve.
A Father’s Despair
In the city of Myra lived a poor man with three daughters. He had once been well-off, but misfortune had stripped away everything he owned. In those days, a young woman could not marry without a dowry — a sum of money given to her future husband’s family. Without one, his daughters faced a bleak and frightening future, possibly being sold into servitude just so the family could survive.
The father had no money and no way to earn it. Night after night, he despaired over what would become of his beloved children.
A Gift in the Dark
Word of the family’s plight reached Nicholas. He wanted to help — but he also knew the proud father would never accept charity given openly, and Nicholas had no wish to embarrass the family or be thanked.
So he waited until the dark of night. Quietly, he approached the house and tossed a bag filled with gold coins through an open window. In the morning, the astonished father found exactly enough to provide a dowry for his eldest daughter.
Some time later, a second bag of gold appeared the same way, securing a future for the second daughter. By now the father was determined to discover the identity of his mysterious benefactor. So on the third night, he kept watch — and when a third bag of gold came through the window, he rushed out and caught Nicholas in the act. Nicholas begged the man to tell no one what he had done. He had never wanted credit; the joy of helping was reward enough.
Why We Hang Stockings
In one of the most beloved versions of the story, the bags of gold didn’t land on the floor at all. They fell into stockings or shoes that the daughters had hung by the fireplace to dry overnight. When the girls woke, they found their stockings heavy with gold.
And so a tradition was born. To this day, children around the world hang stockings by the fire on Christmas Eve, hoping to wake to small treasures inside — a gentle echo of three bags of gold and the kind-hearted bishop who gave everything and asked for nothing in return.
